KijaniSpace has successfully deployed a new field monitoring station at Greater Hope Farm in Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda, marking another milestone in the project’s crop farming pilot activities. Working alongside local farmers and technical experts, the deployment team installed the monitoring infrastructure that will support real-time environmental data collection and future integration with the project’s Space-IoT Box.
Located near the shores of Lake Victoria, Greater Hope Farm provides an ideal environment for validating climate-smart agriculture technologies under real farming conditions. The farm cultivates maize, bananas, tomatoes and green peppers, representing a diverse mix of staple and horticultural crops that require different irrigation, soil management and climate monitoring approaches. Tomatoes are already under production, green peppers are in nursery beds, while maize and bananas have been established in the field.
A Pilot Site with Strong Technical Readiness
Before deployment, KijaniSpace conducted a comprehensive site assessment to evaluate the farm’s infrastructure and environmental conditions. The assessment confirmed several characteristics that make Greater Hope Farm well suited for piloting digital agriculture technologies.
The farm has reliable grid electricity, good 4G mobile connectivity, and a solar-powered submersible irrigation pump that draws water directly from Lake Victoria into storage tanks. Irrigation is carried out using both sprinkler and flood irrigation systems, providing an opportunity to evaluate how Earth Observation and IoT data can support more efficient water management.
The assessment also identified the farm’s sandy loam soil, which supports a range of crops but requires careful monitoring of soil moisture and weather conditions to optimise crop growth and irrigation scheduling. These conditions make the site particularly valuable for testing data-driven advisory services designed to improve agricultural productivity while promoting sustainable use of water resources.
From Installation to Decision Support
The newly installed monitoring station is more than a piece of field equipment. It creates the foundation for collecting local environmental measurements that can be combined with Copernicus Earth Observation data through the Space-IoT Box. This integration enables researchers and developers to generate location-specific insights that support smarter agricultural decisions.
As the pilot progresses, the monitoring station will contribute to validating digital services for:
- soil and environmental monitoring;
- irrigation management;
- crop health assessment;
- weather-informed farming decisions;
- climate-smart agricultural advisory services.
Why This Matters
Across the Lake Victoria Basin, many farmers experience increasing climate variability while having limited access to localised environmental information. Although satellite observations provide valuable regional data, combining them with measurements collected directly on farms creates much richer information for practical decision-making.
The Greater Hope Farm deployment demonstrates how KijaniSpace is translating advanced Earth Observation and IoT technologies into solutions that can be tested, improved and eventually adopted by farmers, researchers, SMEs and agricultural advisory services across the region.
