In April 2025, all 13 consortium partners met in person for the first time after six months of collaboration. The General Assembly took place in Kisumu, a green lakeside city in western Kenya. Meeting logistics were coordinated by LakeHub Foundation, a local innovation hub based in Kisumu.

The KijaniSpace project has successfully completed the installation of the Space-IoT Box at the Nyakasanga Irrigation Scheme in Tanzania, marking another important milestone in demonstrating how Earth Observation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can support climate-smart agriculture across the Lake Victoria Basin. The installation enables the pilot site to begin collecting and integrating field-based sensor information with Copernicus Earth Observation data through the Space-IoT Box platform. Rather than simply deploying equipment, this activity establishes a digital infrastructure capable of supporting smarter irrigation management, environmental monitoring, and data-driven agricultural decision-making. Rice production in the Lake Victoria Basin faces increasing pressure from climate variability, changing rainfall patterns, and the need to improve water-use efficiency. Farmers often have limited access to timely environmental information that could help optimise irrigation and reduce production risks. The Space-IoT Box addresses this challenge by bringing together satellite data, geospatial information, IoT sensing and digital services into a single platform designed for climate-smart agriculture. The Nyakasanga pilot demonstrates how digital technologies can be integrated into an operational irrigation scheme. The site covers approximately 40 acres of year-round rice cultivation, is supplied by Lake Victoria through two high-capacity pumps, and benefits from reliable electricity and mobile connectivity—creating a suitable environment for continuous environmental monitoring and future decision-support services. The installation also provides an operational environment for validating KijaniSpace technologies under real farming conditions. Data collected during the pilot will support further development of digital advisory services, strengthen collaboration between technology developers and agricultural stakeholders, and generate practical evidence for future replication across the region. As the pilot progresses, the infrastructure will help demonstrate how integrated Earth Observation and IoT solutions can improve agricultural resilience while supporting innovation ecosystems involving farmers, researchers, SMEs, developers and public organisations. www.kijanispace.eu

✨✨ Ideas sparked fast in Kisumu, Kenya as KijaniSpace hosted a hands-on ideathon on smart-climate agri- and aquaculture. Participants explored real challenges from farms and fish ponds and shaped practical, data-driven solutions—from climate-aware sensors to smarter water and energy use. The energy in the room showed what local collaboration can do: turn insight into innovation and build climate-resilient food systems across East Africa.
Ideas sparked fast in Kisumu, Kenya as KijaniSpace hosted a hands-on ideathon
The KijaniSpace Ideathon in Kisumu (30–31 Oct 2025) brought together a room full of people who were ready to think, challenge, build and learn together. Watching the discussions unfold — laptops open, notebooks filling, ideas bouncing across the circle — you could feel the atmosphere shift from “workshop” to “shared mission”. What stood out most was the balance in the room: different backgrounds, disciplines, genders, and experiences all shaping the same problems from different angles. Inclusion wasn’t a slogan; it was a working method. Everyone contributed. Everyone listened. Everyone learned something new. The intensity came from genuine curiosity: How can Earth observation, IoT-solutions, local knowledge, and digital innovation unlock new opportunities for Lake Victoria Basin? How do we build tools that communities actually want to use? How do we turn space data into something that strengthens livelihoods? These two days were a reminder of what co-creation looks like when it works — focused, warm, noisy in the best way, and full of small sparks that grow into something larger. Kisumu showed the spirit of KijaniSpace in action: grounded, collaborative and future-oriented. The journey continues.
The KijaniSpace Ideathon in Kisumu (30–31 Oct 2025)
We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the EAST AFRICA KIJANISPACE PROJECT IDEATION WORKSHOP, which took place in hashtag#Kisumu, hashtag#Kenya, from October 30th to 31st, 2025. The IDEATHON workshop, themed "Harnessing Space-IoT Technologies for Climate-Smart Agriculture and Aquaculture in the Lake Victoria Basin", brought together stakeholders to: ➡️ Establish a shared understanding of the regional challenges and user needs in crop and fish farming. ➡️Familiarize participants with KijaniSpace technologies and the KijaniBox concept. ➡️Engage in hands-on Ideation and co-design sessions to explore and prototype innovative, technology-based solutions. The successful event, organized by Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL, LakeHub, Africa Bioenergy Program Limited, Mwalimu Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MNUAT), and KijaniSpace consortium partners, moves us closer to a sustainable future and green job creation in East Africa.
