KijaniSpace Opens Applications for Kisumu Talent Training Programme

Applications are now open for the Kisumu Talent Training Programme, a three-month online-first training journey for students, early-career professionals, and innovators interested in space technology, digital systems, and sustainable agriculture. The programme runs from 21 May to 6 August 2026 and includes a Hackathon in July 2026 at LakeHub in Kisumu, Kenya.

Participants will work with Earth Observation data, IoT sensors, and applied innovation methods to develop practical solutions for agriculture and aquaculture. The programme is free of charge, with an expected workload of 3–6 hours per week. Sessions are held on Thursdays at 2 pm EAT.

The application deadline is 31 March 2026 at 16:00 EAT, and around 60 participants will be selected based on motivation, background relevance, and commitment.

The following training content is provided

Unit 1 GIS & Earth Observation: Ever wondered how satellites see the world or how digital maps are actually made? Over five weeks (starting May 22), we’ll take you from the basics of spatial data to the cutting edge of satellite monitoring. You’ll learn to visualize geographic data and analyze the Earth from above. 

Unit 2 Internet of Things (IoT): If you’ve ever wanted to build your own “smart” gadgets, this is your moment. Starting June 26, this four-week unit dives into the Internet of Things. You’ll get hands-on with electronics, learning how to wire sensors, master Arduino programming, and set up radio communications. It’s the chance to move from being a tech user to being a tech creator.

Unit 3 App Development and Use-cases: This is where all the pieces of the puzzle come together. Starting July 24, this three-week finale focuses on turning data into real-world solutions. You’ll explore how to combine Earth Observation and IoT data to build functional apps, specifically looking at how they can revolutionize precision farming.
