Held against the backdrop of Lake Victoria’s shimmering shores, the event united innovators, policymakers, researchers, regional leaders, and government representatives from across East Africa to explore how space-based data and IoT technologies can revolutionize climate‑smart agriculture and aquaculture.
LakeHub’s Assistant Project Manager, Ms. Margaret Sandra, captured the essence of the event perfectly:
From policy tables to the shores of Lake Victoria, through LakeHub, I had the privilege to be part of the East Africa stakeholders meeting in the vibrant city of Mwanza. The 2-day workshop consisted of a melting pot of ideas which brought together brilliant minds of innovators, policymakers ,researchers, government bodies and regional stakeholders with an aim to explore how satellite data and IoT can be a game-changer for sustainable practices in the climate-smart agri-aquaculture sector while empowering local communities in our region.
From insightful conversations on regional collaboration towards the success of the project, this workshop underscores the power of space science as a catalyst for sustainable growth in the East Africa region and Africa as a continent.Aside from the extensive conference room discussions, the major highlight of the workshop was our visit to the @Luchelele Beach, where we conducted a site visit on fish farming initiatives as part of a localised approach to sustainable aquaculture. The potential for aquaculture in this area is immense and quite encouraging to see firsthand the efforts being made by local communities to promote sustainable solutions by integrating technology, traditional knowledge, climate and environmental conservation.
Key Takeaway: 💡 The future of East Africa and Africa ‘s development lies in our ability to collaborate, adapt, and innovate long-term sustainable solutions that create socio-economic growth across the region.
Grateful for the opportunity to learn, engage and contribute to conversations that shape the future of empowering climate-smart Agri-Aquaculture for smallholder farmers in our region.
